1. As owners, can we be excluded from workers compensation insurance?
Yes, you can and it helps with premium savings. If you want to be covered there is a minimum payroll we have to use and there is a cap/maximum payroll to be used for owners. Most business owners exclude themselves from coverage, but not always.
2. Are higher deductibles a good way for me to decrease my cost of insurance?
It does reduce your premium, but not that much. For example, taking a $500 deductible vs. $250 on property insurance will not affect premium too much. However, on a $40 million building, selecting a $10,000 deductible vs. a $2,500 deductible will provide costs savings.
3. Should I report a minor injury on workers comp?
Yes, it is always best to report a claim as it could turn I into something big.
4. Is it ok for my employees to drive company vehicles home after work and keep them at their homes?
There may be certain situations that call for this, for example a manager or supervisor, but generally it is best to keep company vehicles garaged at your place of business. But, for contractors/service/wholesale type companies that have a sales force with company vehicles, it is fine to drive them home.
